New Perdido Key Snorkeling Reef

Adding to the already beautiful, white sandy beach of Perdido Key, an artificial reef is now in place for locals and visitors to enjoy.   Last week, spectators gathered to watch as a barge lowered concrete structures into the Gulf of Mexico just south of Public Beach Access # 1 off Sandy Key Drive.

Once complete, the reef is projected to be approximately 280 feet long and between 10 and 16 feet deep.  This reef will bring in many species of marine life including turtles, octopus, and an array of tropical reef fish.   Although there are many wrecks for divers to enjoy, there are a limited number of shore locations for divers and snorkelers.  There are currently artificial reefs at Pensacola Beach and Navarre; however this is the first beach accessible underwater attraction in the Perdido Key area.

Perdido Key, Florida is the perfect destination accommodating paddle boarding, kayaking, snorkeling, and diving.   Visit your local Pointe South office for a list of enjoyable coastal activities and attractions.

Please help us maintain a healthy environment for our marine life and enjoy our beaches and all the beauty that Northwest Florida and Coastal Alabama have to offer.

Note:  Florida Law requires a diver-down flag for snorkeling and diving.  Please contact a local diving agency for rules, regulations, and professional guidance.

Mardi Gras in Perdido Key!

The Gulf Coast is well known for Mardi Gras celebrations. We love to let the good times roll down the coast, and that includes in Perdido Key!

We may not have Bourbon street but we do have loads of fun events and festivals taking place during the celebrations and that includes the annual Perdido Key Mardi Gras Festival!

The Mardi Gras Festival kicks off with the annual boat parade which begins at Galvez Landing. Participants will make their way down the Intracoastal and around before returning to the landing. After the parade enjoy spending time at Hub Stacey’s on the Point. The kids will enjoy the special activities that have been cooked up just for them. Speaking of cooking, be sure to line up to taste the Cajun creations entered in the annual cook-off. And, you can watch as the boat parade awards are given out. Be sure to stick around for the evening fireworks displays, as well.

Wear your purple, green and gold on Saturday, March 1 and get ready to let the good times roll as you take in the array of activities beginning at noon. Be sure to stick around for the evening fireworks displays, as well.

Holiday Activities on the Gulf Coast

Whether you own real estate in Northwest Florida and Coastal Alabama or will just be visiting the area, you won’t want to miss out on the tons of family-fun that can be had along our shores this holiday season.

First up, ice skating. Yes, you read that correctly. If you live in or will be on vacation to Pensacola Beach, head in to the Pensacola Bay Center to experience ice skating on select dates. Or, if you happen to be in Perdido Key or Orange Beach, check out The Wharf. They will offer ice skating until January 12, 2014. It’s just $8 for two hours of skating and your skate rental. For $2 more, ride the famed ferris wheel!

You also won’t want to miss Santa’s arrival to our shores. See him as he comes to shore via the lighted boat parade in Pensacola Beach on December 7, 2013 or hang out behind the Flora-Bama Lounge to see Santa jump from his sleigh and parachute to shore for a day of music and fun on December 14, 2013.

Thanksgiving at the Beach

Thanksgiving is an absolutely wonderful time of year to spend at the beach. The weather is nice and, well, it’s the beach! And, while you could certainly prepare all your holiday favorites in the fully equipped kitchens of our rentals, it’s also a great opportunity to try something a little different!

You may be wondering if there are any open restaurants in Pensacola, Perdido Key or Orange Beach that will be serving Thanksgiving dinner. The answer? Yes! And, some fabulous ones, at that. If you are staying in a Pensacola Beach vacation rental, venture into Pensacola to try the amazing creations served up by The Fish House. While something called ‘grits a ya ya’ may not traditionally appear on your holiday table, we know you will love them, along with the turkey, dressing, green bean casserole and much more. They will open from 11AM to 5PM and reservations are recommended.

In Perdido Key, head over to the annual buffet at the Perdido Key Beach Resort or cook up your favorite dish and head over to the Flora-Bama Lounge potluck. There will also be many area restaurants in Orange Beach serving Thanksgiving dinner. No matter what or where you choose to eat, we hope you have a wonderful turkey day!
